“Jong Keukengeweld”: a story for your tummy.

Passionate about food? I know right, who isn’t?

But how many times have you got the chance to eat a culinary 4/5 course menu for a small price? In Flanders 35 young chefs are inviting young people like us (up to 26) in their restaurants, even for those of us on a student budget. This because of an initiative by visit Flanders called ‘Jong Keukengeweld*’.

Their goal is to open up the gastronomic world for young people, who are generally less likely to appear at the fancy dinner tables (lucky for you if you do 😉 ). We had the chance to lunch at ‘Zoethout**’ (liquorice), a restaurant in Wellen where 29 year old chef Laurens Snykers took us upon a culinary journey of pure ingredients, full flavours and a beyond beautiful presentation.

We had the four course menu for 65 euro’s, including -a lot of-  customised wines. We started with four appetizers, or like the french would call it so elegantly: ‘amuse bouche’. This all accompanied by a locally made sparkling wine called Schorpion***.

After having tasted these, our curiosity to have the main courses was even more sparked. The first course consisted of a filet of ray, fried kapers and caviar.

The second course was a splash of colour made of squid and paprika topped up with a spaghetti of butternutpumpkin.

After two tasty fish dishes, the third course brought to us an amazing duck with truffles.

The dessert focused on plums with almond ice and yoghurt crumble.

We ended our experience with a coffee accompanied with some surprising chocolates (like dill combined with white dark chocolate) and pastries which where put on liquorice.

It was a great experience that lasted for almost four hours. Thus plenty of time full of cosy chatter with some friends, extraordinary food and delicious wines.

Truth has to be told that we cheated a bit, the appetizers, the truffle and the coffee where optional extra’s for which we had to pay (bringing the total cost to 105 euro) but overall Jong Keukengeweld is a low threshold initiative to experience culinary cuisine with every kind of budget.
